Mediation is an ancient art that helps you cope with life’s stresses and relax your body. It also helps in staying focused, thinking clearly, and achieving a flow state. People often think meditation is only for old people who have fulfilled their worldly responsibilities. But, meditation is for everybody-even students. In fact, meditation can benefit students as much as anyone else as it can help them build their personality.
The stress of daily life, routine of school and home, examinations and the worry for a career are enough for any student to be in a challenging space. While entertainment, sports, hobbies and reading are a significant outlet to ease stress, nothing can beat the power of daily meditation for students.
Recently, the Manodarpan Cell undertook a survey of school students to analyse their perceptions on issues impacting their mental health. A total of 3.79 lakh students took part in this survey from KVs, JNVs, State Government schools & private schools.
The survey demonstrated a few areas where students across the schools responded positively: seeking support from friends, satisfaction with school life, trustworthiness, and yoga and meditation as a coping strategy.
Manodarpan Cell is an initiative of the Ministry of Education (MoE) and is aimed at offering psychosocial help to students, instructors and families for intellectual fitness and emotional health for the duration of the instances of COVID-19 and beyond.
It should be no surprise then, that meditation for students is a critical necessity to take them ahead in life.
With conversations on mental well-being and health taking place in the world around us, it’s important to introduce students to the practice of morning meditation. Meditation reverses age-related memory loss and in students particularly, it helps students to understand and absorb information faster by relaxing the brain and distressing it. Furthermore, meditation promotes concentration, happiness levels, relaxation, and self-awareness, improves sleep and enhances general emotional well-being. The best part? It has no side effects and any student from the age of one year to 19 years can absorb the positive changes it brings.
Morning meditation also enhances creativity, innovation and makes students more open and empathetic to the people and the world around them. It also encourages them to have a more peaceful state of mind, energises them and deal with negative emotions like anger, depression and others.
Students who meditate regularly are better able to think creatively, grasp information, and perform other cognitive functions. Meditation also improves their IQ level.
Meditation benefits students by bringing peace of mind. It improves a student’s concentration and helps him cope with stress during tests or exams.
Meditation helps students accept challenges and work differently as well as develop confidence in public speaking.
Morning meditation is extremely beneficial for the students. Therefore, provide them support and confidence by demonstrating simple techniques. Encourage the young students to choose a comfortable space, sit with their eyes closed and focus on their breathing process. Instruct them to feel the movement of their stomach and be aware of how their body relaxes slowly. This process can last from 5 minutes to more depending on their comfort and gradual progression. Some soft music in the background will help them relax faster.
Once the process is over, ask them to share how they felt, whether they could imagine something, hear familiar sounds or anything else they wish to share.
For older students, the same process can be used and different techniques that focus on mudras can be introduced. Ask them to acknowledge their thoughts, feelings, and emotions and face them instead of brushing them away. It increases self-awareness and gently calms the mind.
We at Genesis Global School believe that health plays a critical role in the overall development of students. Resonating this philosophy, we encourage students to meditate and help channel positive thinking among children.
